It’s all thanks to Pilots N Paws and local shelters. Tuesday, more than a dozen pups across south Alabama will now have a place to call home — and they’re heading to Tampa, Florida.

A small-engine plane made its landing at Mac Crenshaw Memorial Airport in Greenville, traveling from Tampa, Florida to pick up some very special cargo to take back home — puppies. Kandys Killough, who runs Second Chance Rescue Shelter in Greenville, is one of the people trying to help them.

“They get put off on the side of the road or taken to a shelter and just forgotten about by whoever was irresponsible enough to take them there and let the momma dog get pregnant, so it’s not their fault that they were born,” Said Killough.

But this isn’t your everyday dog rescue — these are puppies from all over south Alabama coming from shelters where they might be put down and saved by the Butler County Humane Society.

Killough says she goes about three times a week to pick them up from shelters because they’re over-crowded — but Pilots N Paws, a non-profit organization of pilots who volunteer their time and aircraft to move animals around the country to rescue shelters, partnered with local rescuers to send a special delivery of re-located pups.

“I guess I’ve just always had a soft spot for dogs. And I don’t think a lot about it until I actually see the dogs and I’m glad we can take them some place where they can get a better home because to me, all dogs are the same dog,” Said Ed Golly, a volunteer for Pilots N Paws who flies a plane full of dogs at least three times a month.

Now, 13 dogs have a home waiting for them. They’re all going to fosters and eventually, a forever home.

This is nothing new for the Butler County Humane Society. They say they’ve had about 30 aircraft pick-ups just this year. Another pick-up is scheduled this Friday at the Mac Crenshaw Memorial Airport in Greenville, where they’ll be sending about 30 dogs to Tampa, Orlando and Naples, Florida.
