WARRENTON, Va. (WUSA9) — Five volunteer pilots flew 26 rescue animals to Warrenton-Fauquier Airport, Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013. See photos of the take-off in the photo gallery.

Forty-seven volunteer planes flew over 400 pets from high-kill shelters around Hinesville, Ga. to airports in Virginia, New Jersey and Florida. The pilots participated in a “Flyaway” event organized by Pilots N’ Paws, a non-profit organizationdedicated to transporting animals out of high-kill shelters.

Pilots faced a foggy morning Saturday at Midcoast Regional Airport (Wright Army Airport) Ft. Stewart in Ga. Once the planes landed in Warrenton, Va., the pets went to assigned new homes or two area rescue organizations.

    Receiving Organizations were Crate Escape, FOHA (Friends of Homeless Animals), HART (Homeless Animal Rescue Team), Suncoast Animal Rescue League, Tampa Bay Humane Society, Humane Society of Naples, A Second Chance for Puppies and Kittens, Tampa Bay SPCA, Justin Bartlett Animal Rescue, Humane Society of Atlantic County, Animal Adoption Center, and Puppies and More. You could look to see which ones are in your area.
