Simon and Scribbles

Wade Roberts headed out on a flight from Pearland Regional (KLVJ) in Houston to Hammond, LA (HDC) to pick up a collie, Simon, and a Papillon mix, Scribbles, who had been hit by a car. Poor little Papillon girl had a broken hip and leg.

He flew them to David Wayne Hooks Memorial Airport (DWH) in Houston. On the short flight home from DWH to LVJ, all hell broke loose with the afternoon pop-up thunderstorms, heavy rains, low visibility, and hail that the Houston area often gets in the afternoons this time of year.   Wade managed to deviate around them visually and with the help of Sirius/XM NEXRAD, Stormscope and Air Traffic Control.

He was thinking about an alternate when Pearland suddenly became 3 miles visibility. He landed with a 20 knot crosswind. On the bright side, there was no traffic in the pattern, and he didn’t have to clean squished insects off of the wings, windows or fuselage since the airplane got a thorough wash in flight.

Thank you for your sacrifices. Risk and expense are always involved with flight. Your love for dogs is shared by so many that work on their behalf, yet so many times must see efforts come to a dead end. You guys step up with that one precious skill, and make everything all better! We love you and appreciate you beyond what words can express.

These pilots and all of the compassionate individuals who facilitate these rescues are true angels. Thanks to each of you who do so much to make life better for these previously unfortunate animals. I am really interested in adopting the precious collie. Please let me know how to apply. Thanks again to all of you.

Sandi, I flew Simon to a Houston-area foster for Texas Collie & Sheltie Rescue. A few days later, I flew the boy to another foster for the same group in the Dallas area. You can inquire about him through http://www.texascollierescue.org/index.html
I personally appreciate your interest in Simon; he’s one special boy.
