Simon and Scribbles
Wade Roberts headed out on a flight from Pearland Regional (KLVJ) in Houston to Hammond, LA (HDC) to pick up a collie, Simon, and a Papillon mix, Scribbles, who had been hit by a car. Poor little Papillon girl had a broken hip and leg.
He flew them to David Wayne Hooks Memorial Airport (DWH) in Houston. On the short flight home from DWH to LVJ, all hell broke loose with the afternoon pop-up thunderstorms, heavy rains, low visibility, and hail that the Houston area often gets in the afternoons this time of year. Wade managed to deviate around them visually and with the help of Sirius/XM NEXRAD, Stormscope and Air Traffic Control.
He was thinking about an alternate when Pearland suddenly became 3 miles visibility. He landed with a 20 knot crosswind. On the bright side, there was no traffic in the pattern, and he didn’t have to clean squished insects off of the wings, windows or fuselage since the airplane got a thorough wash in flight.
“Many thank to our gracious pilot, Wade Roberts, who helped us get Scribbles and Simon to Texas. God bless you Wade!”
