Stolen Terriers Go Back Home
A Port Aransas, TX woman’s ex stole her two 13-year-old terrier mixes in December. Six weeks ago, the ex and his new girlfriend were arrested (reason unknown) in Morgantown, NC and the old brothers were taken to a shelter. They were scheduled to be put down, but the owner learned where they were and tagged them. Only problem: she recently lost her job and had no way to drive and retrieve them or to fly them commercially.
It took a while to fill all of the legs, but four pilots (Neal Bouyett, Jeff Wall, Bill Amsden and me) flew them over two days (Bill boarded them overnight). I connected with Bill at Liberty, TX (T78) and had the home stretch Sunday to deliver the pooches back to the mom. She cried when I delivered them. We had, she said, restored her faith in humanity and humankind. Pretty cool thing for four pilots to accomplish.
Despite the TAFs and Flight Service advice, the ceiling didn’t lift or break (such is life and flying on the Texas coast during the summer). I ended up flying Liberty to Port Aransas (T78 to RAS) between 1,500′-2,000′. I hate flying that low for any distance, so I flew along the coast instead of direct so I could put down on a packed sand beach if necessary.
