Re: deaf kitty needs to get to her forever home
For these very long transports, here is an aviation route planner that may help.
http://airnav.com/plan/fuel/
One can enter the start and end points along with a leg length, and the program will select stops based on criteria. Try leg lengths of around 300-400 miles for starters.

Lindsey, use the PNP map showing pilot locations. It's on the home page. Few pilots foster so you can't count on that but you can look for foster volunteers along the route by using the PNP volunteer map. You'll need fosters for overnight or longer about every 500-600 miles. You pretty much have to use the pilot map and volunteer map in conjunction with one of the aviation nav maps online, and then contact pilots and fosters along that route. Also, it doesn't matter what the "ground miles" are, as flights are in nautical miles (nm). That's better anyway, since the distance is shorter and in a mostly-straight line. Try to increase the distance of your legs to 300-350. This is a very long transport; you might have better luck checking the airline employee board for volunteers. The best option for your adopter is to have the kitten flown on a commercial carrier so she can get there in mere hours rather than weeks of travel via short hops with up to 10 pilots/transfers.krisline wrote:How do I know if there is a pilot from Pilots N Paws Available in that area- is there any way to check?

Re: Cat going west (5 pilot) route 3/20/10
From a pilot's perspective:is is a very long transport; you might have better luck checking the airline employee board for volunteers. The best option for your adopter is to have the kitten flown on a commercial carrier so she can get there in mere hours rather than weeks of travel via short hops with up to 10 pilots/transfers.
For this particular transport, it's likely true. Every additional pilot transfer requires an increase in difficulty, since you have to align schedules, aim for good weather along the route, and arrange to find foster homes along the way for regular transfers or in case of weather.
Strictly from a financial standpoint, a 1300 nm trip is 2600 nm when the pilots all have to return. With a guesstimate of 125 kts as an average speed for the planes, this still translates into nearly 21 hours in the air for kitty. If you assume rental prices for planes at ~$100/hr, that's $2100 in "donations" you're asking from the pilots involved, plus the additional time and hassles associated with the transfer. It's a daunting task for a single transport.
More likely would be if you could find a trucker or something that could haul kitty most of the way ( e.g. to Denver ) and then arrange for a one- or two-leg flight from there.
Most likely would be if you can get one of the airline employees to take kitty along on a commercial flight to Denver/Salt Lake City (or even closer), and then transport by car or small plane from there.
I'm sorry for the bleak opinion, but the reality is the more parties involved in the transfer, the less likely the transport is going to take place.
Re: Route changed
Thanks Gimble,
We've listed Fern on Operation Roger as well- and ARF flights- but didn't have many available flights in the western region. I'll see what I can do to get some more volunteers for flying for Pilots N Paws in the Montana area for the future. Meanwhile, does the above route look okay- I think I have someone for every stretch except from Louisville, KY to St. Louis, MO (needing a foster home as well from March 17th to March 20th).
