For single greatest device, I go with the Garmin 496.

Runner-ups would be autopilots, and portable O2.

I gotta agree with you. I also have a certified GPS in the pannel. DME, ADF, (It might even work I'm not sure) Glide slope, and totally agree my yoke mounted 396 is the single most usefull device I have. The XM package, even though minutes old, gives me tons of info at your fingertips. The freq's, nrst, music. TFR's. Unbelievable tool. Mine is hard wired with the voltage alarm, and a five hour battery backup. Kinda makes you wonder the future?

For me, a yoke mounted small clipboard/approach plate holder and a coffe cup holder.

I've had the "anywhere" map on the HP ATC for about a year and for the money, I find it a lot better handheld than the 396. I have not had the chance to play with the 496 or the newest Garmin but my little ATC has helped keep me in line and out of trouble on many occasion.
