Hi all,

The pilots ultimately choose which airports to use but here are some suggestions of online sites you can go to and utitlize for your area.

By researching various locations, this will aid the pilots in choosing the correct airport for them and will also give you a location to work from with regards to distance you will need to drive to send and receive your animals. Just read and follow the instructions on each site for information. You can then share availability of airports in your area with the pilot who has committed to help you. From there, the pilot will choose. Just might save them a little time and those of us in rescue are the ones who need to go that extra mile before the skymiles! Thank you to pilot Jason for his suggestion and instructions on how to use skyvector!

If this is already posted somewhere, please allow me to bump it up...

For those requesting rescue transport you may visit http://www.SkyVector.com to plot distances between airports.

On the right side under LOCATION LOOKUP in the text box enter the desired route (if you know the airports) for example:
KSMO (space) KSBP.

Make sure there is a K in front of the airport identifier.
Also make sure there is a space between each airport.

CLICK "GO"

The distance and route line will be displayed next to the departure airport.
You can drag the map around to view the route or nearby airports and cities.

If you need help don't hesitate to ask around, most pilots are familiar with this website.Jason Chipkin

One word of free advice (worth every cent you pay for it), allow the pilot to select the airport. Let me rephrase that. In all cases unless there are mitigating circumstances the pilot must select the airport.

I stress that because there are many things a pilot must consider. Does the airport have fuel? Is the fuel satisfactorily priced? Does the airport have an instrument approach? Are the runways oriented properly for the anticipated winds? Will the airport accomodate the pilot's needs as far as being within range of his airplane's endurance?

If a rescue has an airport preference the pilot and the rescue may jointly agree to use that particular airport, but even if the most convenient airport is O'Hare, and the rescue lives next door, some pilots may opt to use a different airport.

Another site that I've found convenient for locating US airports is AirNav. It can be searched by identifier, city/state, and can be browsed by state as well.

Enter the "City, ST", airport name, or airport ID in the box or click on the "Browse by U.S. State" link to see a list by state. The database includes public airports, private airports, and helipads soo the results need to be filtered and the pilot needs to make the final determination as to suitability. It can give you the identifiers to plug into the Skyvector site.

So, if you want to locate nearby airports, give it a try.

I'll add that I believe that within a few years, usage will be restricted at airports with commercial service. If and when the TSA gets their way, pilots wishing to use those airports will be required to jump through the same hoops as pilots who currently want to use Washington DC airports. This will involve additional security training, criminal background checks, fingerprinting, etc.

Plainly stated, I'm not willing to jump through those hoops.

Adding to what Steve said without getting this into a political discussion.....

As TSA continues to impose new and stricter restrictions on airports served by commercial operations it not only affects the pilots, but it will have a huge impact on anyone that needs access to the ramp or aircraft. I currently need help from rescues when loading. I cannot handle multiple dogs while trying to load them into crates one at a time. I rely on the rescues bringing or receiving the animals to assist.

Even if a pilot was willing to jump through the planned hoops that are soon to be required, it might not be practical for the rescues who not only have to go through screening, but so will the animals and any food or medications or toys or other items which also may be transported with the animal.

If you object to the direction TSA is going, learn about their plans and make your feelings known to your elected officials. If what TSA is planning is implemented, rescue transports as we now know them may be a thing of the past.

Another website that should help those trying to track these airlifts is:

http://www.flightaware.com Ask your pilot for the tail number of the plane s/he is using. It will most likely be a N number, like my usual plane, N8385s. Plug that in over on the left side of the flightaware page under tail number (be sure to use the "n" at the start of the number) and, if the pilot is on an instrument flight plan or getting some flight following, you SHOULD be able to watch the flight, and see when the plane should arrive.

To add to what Jim says... Some pilots use the "Compassion Flight" designation. When they do that, you would track them with a modified tail number. You would substitute CMFfor the first 3 or 4 digits of the tail number. CMF + last 3 digits of the tail number

N213TG would become CMF3TG
