Best way to request a ride from IL to CA?

Post by abgrauppermidwest » Sun Jun 13, 2010 8:26 pm

American Brussels Griffon Rescue Alliance, http://www.abgra.org, has an 11 lb, 2 yr old neutered male Griff in the Chicago, IL area (Lemont, IL) that we need to move to our West Coast Rescue Coordinator in Yucaipa, CA, [email protected].

I read the instructions which suggest a 3 hour flight/400 miles max. Would it be better to post this request in the commercial aviation volunteer section? This is our first time here and this is a very long flight, so we decided to ask for guidance.

We would prefer that this little Griff fly in cabin, rather than cargo if at all possible. Thank you so much for any suggestions.

HI Judy,
All requests for transport belong in the Animals Needing Rides section, regardless of the length of the transport. You would however need to break it up into segments and find several pilots to complete the mission. (Unless someone happens to be heading that way already).

The commercial volunteer section you refer to is simply for those people to post their availability. I suggest you read through their posts to see if anyone there might fit your need and contact them by PM or email. I do know there are some pilots & attendants who can take your dog in the cabin while on duty or on their days off.

You might also want to check with PetAirways as they fly from Chicago to LA and all dogs are in the cabin. http://www.petairways.com/

Good luck,
Joanne

Thank you, Joanne. We aren't quite sure how to break it up into segments, so will check the posts from the commercial volunteers. We did look into Pet Airways, but it will cost about $350.00 and our bank account can't quite handle that right now.

Start by posting the trip with the zip codes for starting & ending cities. Once that is posted the top of your post will show
Sending Zip Code:
Receiving Zip Code:
Map This Request Flight Plan using Skyvector Flight Plan using Runwayfinder More Mapping Options

Click on the red Map this request & a pop up will give you the transport mapped out. Look for the plane icons (which denote pilots) and start contacting those along the way. Often the pilots will suggest an airport they are willing to fly to, which helps you plan the legs. Also if you have foster homes in your group along the way, try for airports near them as you most likely will not get the dog there in 1 day. (And weather is always a factor even in the shortest trips).

Hope this helps.
