How far will a transport go?

Post by woofslc » Thu Jun 24, 2010 2:13 pm

We don't have an official request yet, however are looking at moving a dog from a shelter in Salt Lake City, UT to a rescue group near Portland, ME. Is this feasible? I read that most transports are 3 hours or approx. 400 miles. We are desperate since the summer months make it difficult to fly animals in the heat on commercial/cargo flights. We'd love any ideas or feedback about this potential request before we pursue an 'official' transport request.

Thank you so much,
Melissa

Using the planes most of us fly, this trip would be incredibly difficult to pull off, because of getting pilots' schedules and weather to cooperate all the way through. Someone will also have to foster overnight for a night or two, because of the distance involved. It is possible, but a long shot.

However, if someone flying a corporate jet or other similar faster piston airplane is willing to do it, it will be much more doable.

Post the request and see what happens.

You are right that some commercial flights for pets are restricted by temperature extremes--but I believe most commercial airlines have cargo holds that are climate controlled, sound proofed and pressurized.

I was involved with the transport of a paralyzed Lab from UT to NC. He was driven to Denver where he flew on PetAirways http://www.petairways.com/ --first to Chicago & then to Wash DC with PNP completing the journey to NC. You could use Denver to Chicago to NY and then request pilots to ME.

You also haven't mentioned the dog's size. There are some commercial flight people here who can sometimes take small pets with them in the cabin. (On-duty or off-duty).

Good luck,
Joanne
