Maximum descent rate?

Postby ShepherdDad on Sat Oct 09, 2010 1:15 am

I was perusing the archives to find a maximum descent rate for dogs. Maybe it is there but I gave up looking. I did see one person's preferred 200-300 FPM.

What is a good maximum, noting that I am usually at 10,500' going to Denver or Meadow Lake (6840').

I don't know that there is a physiological limit of any kind; however, I tend to target descents at 300 fpm and try not to exceed 500 fpm.

I fly with a cat a lot. I keep the decent to 250 fpm, but once had an ATC directed immediate decent of 4000 ft at about 1000 fpm, which the cat did not like at all.
