Dogs Need Hurricane Relief, Too
Hurrican Irma did a number on the Florida Keys. Jeff Bennett, a Pilots N Paws pilot, passed on information that the middle Florida Keys were severely damaged. There was no power and no running water. There were no working toilets in the area either. Dog food and medications were running out, along with people food and toiletries.
So, a group started asking for donations in the way of toiletries, people and dog food, paper products, etc. The people in the Keys also desparately needed Heartgard and flea medications. None of the veterinary practices in the hard hit area were able to get those two items.
Donations came from all over Florida. Thru Eva at the German Shepherd rescue in Daytona Beach, they were able to give at least 700 pounds of dog food and treats. Individuals donated dog and cat food as well. The group was able to collect donations to purchase about $500 worth of Heartgard with the help of Dr. Alicia Emerson at Ravenwood Veterinary Clinic in Port Orange Fl. Dr. Emerson generously donated all the Heartgard she had at nearly cost.
How do you get all those needed items to Key West when roads are damaged and transportation is difficult? You load them on board a plane that has done a lot of Pilots N Paws mission. This time, Steve’s mission wasn’t to move any animals, but insted to get them relief in the form of food and medication.
The back of the airplane was loaded down with dog food – along with people supplies that were desparately needed such as diapers, tooth paste, and eggs!
The PNP group came together as a team to ease the pain of such a devastating event, for both the humans and animals affected.
