Cats in the Plane

In February, Derek completed his 102nd Freedom Flight, helping move 40 cats from Yucca Valley to Visalia in California. It definitely took a village to get this accomplished!  Lynn (from the rescue) worked tirelessly with several pilots to coordinate 3 or 4 planes to get all of these cats to their destination. After multiple weekends and scheduling failures, it eventually worked out to do the trip in the middle of the week. The night before the trip, Derek was able to recruit one of his friends to help with the transport. Funnily enough, his friend then got one of his pilot friends to help with the trip! Through word of mouth, two new pilots were recruited to help save these cats! The trip happened without any surprises, and the cats are now safe and sound in Visalia.

A huge thanks to:

  • Pilots: Derek, Randy, and Dimitrii
  • Kim, who managed to stack the 40 crates in the airplanes
  • Copilots: LJ and Kanoa
  • Rescuers: Ketrena and Aubrey
  • Lynn, the Pilot-Wrangler/Coordinator

Thank you to everyone else involved with this trip to save these 40 cats. If you are interested, Derek made a highlight reel of the flight that you can watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/wDEv0Q3jD1w

“Thank you, Pilots N Paws, for giving me a continued reason to fly, and way to give back.”

-Pilot Derek

Recently, a rescue organization in Georgia made a post on the Pilots N Paws forum asking for help. They had recently found a pregnant dog, which they named Sassy, in an abandoned building in Georgia. She gave birth to 13 puppies a few days later. A while after, Sassy and her pups needed to be transported from rural Georgia to another rescue in Florida, where they could receive medical care, be fostered, and find their forever homes.

Sassy and Her Pups

Thankfully, a PNP pilot, Barbara, stepped up to take the mom and her numerous puppies in her twin-engine plane. She decided to fly to Georgia and fly Sassy and her numerous puppies 300 miles to Florida. They received prompt medical care, and are now safe at a Florida rescue being prepared for adoption. In fact, one of the co-pilots fell in love with Sassy and will likely end up adopting her.

“Helping puppies has always been something I wanted to do.  I believe that animals are a gift from God, and I am thrilled to be helping out any way I can.”

-Pilot Barbara

Thank you to Pilot Barbara, her co-pilots, and all the other people that assisted in getting Sassy and her puppies saved!

Artie after Transport to Hillsboro

Recently, Lynn from a California SPCA made a post on the PNP forum describing Artie: a young,  lovable Malamute that needed to be flown from Salinas, CA to Hillsboro OR, a 12-hour, 700-mile drive that could be flown in a shorter time (and 100 fewer miles).

Thankfully, Erich, Matthew T., and another PNP pilot stepped up to take Artie to Oregon, where he could find a home that is as lovable as he is. After fostering Artie overnight with his family, Matthew flew him 250 miles from Salinas CA to Redding CA, where the other two pilots could take him the remaining distance. While fostered overnight, Matthew’s family showered Artie with lots of love before he went on his journey to Oregon (see pictures)!

PNP would like to thank Matthew and the other pilots who flew (as well as those who offered to fly) Artie, as now he is currently in foster and is being prepared for adoption in Oregon to find his forever home!

“This was a special rescue for us. My wife Amy grew up with two Malamutes and the opportunity to share this amazing breed with our family, even just for a night was amazing. Pilots N Paws has allowed us to combine our love of flying and service with our children! Thank you PNP!”

-Matthew T.

On this Easter Day, we would like to give thanks to Pilots N Paws pilots Mike McGrath (KSUS), Mitch Putman (KLXT), and Josh Mac (KAPA), for helping with SuzyQ’s transport.  This was a three-pilot transport for SuzyQ, and she did very well on her transport. Mike, Mitch, and Josh were very generous of their time, planes, and help to get Suzy to Denver, CO (from St. Louis, MO). Mike has helped American Eskimo Rescue St. Louis with many flights. Thank you all very much, and thank you to the Pilots N Paws for helping homeless dogs get to safety and to their new families. Couldn’t do this without PNP!

We are very grateful to PNP pilots that devote their time, planes, and fuel to help homeless dogs. We couldn’t save as many homeless pets without Pilots N Paws.   Hope you enjoy these wonderful pictures! Thank you so much Mike, Mitch and Josh!

Best regards,

Sandy Michael
