Airport IDs in Listing ‘Subject’

Post by cheetahdriver » Fri Nov 10, 2017 8:57 pm

Feature Request

It would be a HUGE timesaver if in addition to the towns in the Subject, the airport ID were there, too. In case the poster doesn’t know the ID, I see no reason why pilots could’t be allowed to add that info—after the post.

The issue with that is that the poster doesn't know an airport ID - they only enter a zipcode. Where would you think a pilot would add the info afterwards?

Thanks for responding.

I’m suggesting that you create (for example) clickable links (or perhaps mouse-over events) in the PnP notification email’s Subject line that enables all PnP email recipients to easily find the name and location of the airports nearest the towns listed in the posts.

Since the FAA publishes all the necessary information, finding the airport(s) nearest area code ID is largely a user interface issue. (By the way, the FAA airport data is available in text form on wikipedia at http://tinyurl.com/yd38u2xf)

Currently I use the Travelmath website to find this info; i.e., when I see a town listed that I don’t know I manually use the “nearest airport” function located here: https://www.travelmath.com/nearest-airport/city,+state. Here’s the browser query for my home town: “https://www.travelmath.com/nearest-airport/Salem,+VA.” This returns a list of airport names and ID’s in order of their distance from Salem, VA.

Although this is not a trivial undertaking, but because it is constrained by a known data-set it’s not a risky one, either.

I’ll be happy to help in any way I can.
