New pilot search by airport and zip code

Post by mikegreen » Sat May 30, 2015 6:36 pm

Today the forum was updated with a little more help in finding pilots. As some of you know, the older Google-map KML-based searches no longer work, as Google removed support for them earlier this year.

As of now, two new search pages are online, one to search for pilots around a zip code:
http://www.pilotsnpaws.org/maps_more/ma ... ersZip.php

And another to search for pilots around an airport code:
http://www.pilotsnpaws.org/maps_more/ma ... irport.php

Both these pages will show active pilot users within the distance specified around the zip or airport code. The list is sorted by the pilots closest to the searched location, then sorted by the pilot’s last forum activity.
You can click on the username to goto the forum's user page, where you can PM or see details of the user. Also the airport ID will take you to the AOPA airport directory with address and FBO details.

If you wish to PM multiple pilots, best to open two tabs and copy/paste the usernames into the TO of a new private message. The private message TO box will accept multiple usernames, one on each line.

The zip code search is also linked from trip requests. There are two new links, one to show pilots within 50 miles of the sending zip code, and another to show the same within 50 miles of the receiving zip code.

If you have any questions or issues with using these new pages, please post them here or PM me.

Regards,
Mike

Mike - this is really well done.

Q; The column "Willing To Fly" ... does this really add value to the display? In fact, it might create confusion to those that don't understand "0" simply means the pilot does not want to receive email notices. In addition, I know many of us "fudge" the value in this field to manage the number of automated emails we receive in our area.

Rick - good point. Is it valuable at all to display? It is more for notifications...

As a rescue, this is going to make searching for pilots a whole lot easier, thank you!

With regard to the "Willing to fly ..." info, when I am searching for pilots, a 0 just guarantees that they will get an inquiry from me. When there is a value, if it is less than 200 I may pass them over unless I need a shorter leg. Perhaps that is the wrong thing to do. From now on I will solicit support from all pilots in the needed area regardless of their willing to fly number. When the value is 200 or more, that is very useful information in trying to minimize the number of legs required for a long transport.

One other tool that seems to be partially, but not fully implemented is on the Map This Request display, where some but not all pilots (or whatever is selected) appear within the radius selected. For example, when I look at a transport coming into Missoula MT which is 80 miles from me and I select a 100, 150, or 200 mile radius, I sometimes don't appear on the map, but should. This doesn't always happen, but it shouldn't happen at all. If I am within the selected range from ANY point on the the transport direct route, I should be shown. Maybe Mike can look into this.

This is wonderful! Thank You.. This makes it so much easier for us as Rescues to figure out how many legs it is going to take to get our 4 paw kids to where they need to go!

Thanks Again!

This is a fantastic new search tool!
I would also love it if we could see which pilots were instrument rated.
