If the relay cannot be arranged for this weekend, we are still willing to drive them Ontario—Grass Valley on Sunday, and would be happy to learn feeding techniques. We could perhaps even drive out to Hemet Thursday or Friday for instruction. While our dog birth defect experience is limited, I have quite a bit of time with cleft lip/palate infants. Plus, it seems like a lot of these cleft pups are headed to Grass Valley, which is not too far from our home airports, so it looks like we will be transporting more in the future.
The offer is also valid for other animals needing south—north transport Sunday.

Thank you Karla!

I will copy and paste this to Rachele, the rescue director.
I'll give her your number, too so she can contact you directly.

This can be a Hemet to Visalia, and Visalia to Grass Valley, or something similar. Can anyone help with these babies? (There may be a cleft kitten thrown in...!

We are still in Orange County, heading north by car tomorrow morning. I could pick animals up at Ontario airport Sunday morning ~10:00–10:30, but have little more flexibility at this point, and no time to go out to Hemet. If supplies can be provided we can try to tube feed (based on utube videos). We could also pick up in Visalia early tomorrow afternoon on our way.

So sorry: I offered to do this by road last Sunday, but no one accepted the offer. Plane is now down for annual.

We appreciate your offer, but ground transport wouldn't work for these babies and tube feeding isn't something that can simply be explained and learned. The way I was told, if the tube is misplaced in the baby's mouth, it could go into the lungs instead of the esophagus and the baby could die.

Rescue director wasn't comfortable with it.

This is what I was told: "I

"If the tube goes into the lungs of a puppy it will drown to death and it's not some thing that I feel comfortable teaching someone. it's more involved than just sticking a tube in because they need to be pottied before and after they eat and the feeding has to go slow so their stomach has time to expand and you have to check that the tube is not in the lungs in order to feed properly."

I am a physician as well as a pilot. I have placed many feeding tubes and breathing tubes in humans, understand anatomy, how to check position, and the implications of errors. I watched training videos for pups, and was even willing to come to Hemet for a lesson. Furthermore, the total time for ground transport probably would not have much exceeded 2—3 legs by air, given handoffs, delays, etc. That said, it is the rescue director’s decision. She can decide if she wants to invest in tube feeding training us for future transports.
