Russell is Back in the Air Again

Back to back days of rescue for Russell.  He shares his flight for Honey with us:

Russell, Allison, and Honey in Paulding near Atlanta

Honey was such a happy dog. It took about two minutes for her to figure out I wasn’t going to hurt her, and then that tail wagged so much I thought it might fall off. She had a skin disease that covered most of her body, so if you gently scratched her, especially her ribs, with an open hand, you could tell by her face that she was in HEAVEN.

I didn’t get a post clearly ensuring that the transport was a go, so when I woke up, I checked the board again and then called. Sure enough, it was a go, so I rushed to the airport and met Chester. That guy is a saint for waiting for me to get out to the plane. I did my preflight, and we loaded up Honey. She didn’t want to get in. I imagine it’s pretty scary, but she was a trooper.

She was great during the flight and went right to sleep in her crate. When we got to Atlanta, actually Paulding, which I chose because of cheap fuel, we were met by Allison. She was great and so happy to meet Honey (American bulldog). Honey by this time was used to the plane and did not want to get OUT. It took me three tries, but she was happy once she landed on the ramp. The staff of the FBO, Paulding Jet Center, was so great. They loved what we were doing and could NOT believe that I had made the whole trip in one leg. They were very helpful and friendly and even gave me bottled water for free for the trip back.

I finally got back into Terrell about 8PM and was home by 9PM. I was pretty tired but happy about the dogs.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for saving me.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for saving me.

And Allison on the receiving end shares her part of the story:

My name is Allison Funderburk, and I work with Recycla-bull Terrier Rescue out of Columbia, SC. I am part of a Bully Lovers group on Facebook, and one day some one posted a pic of Pebbles, who now goes by the name Honey. She was in a high kill shelter and had 48 hours to live before she was PTS. There was something in her eyes that wouldn’t let me forget her. So, I spent the next 48 hours, with the help of some wonderful bully lover friends, doing everything I could, pulling every string I had, begging and pleading to anyone that would listen to get help for this little scared girl. We were able to pull her 1 hour before her death sentence.

My agreement to foster this little girl from Texas, even though I live in Atlanta, GA, is one of the things I think made people want to help. Because she had somewhere to go. My friend Chester Crawford, who has been doing bull terrier rescue for 30 years, agreed to hang on to her until I could arrange transport. After 2 different land transports falling through, (and them wanting to charge $400-$600, which was beyond all of her medical chip in money) we found Operation Roger which is a trucking organization that transports rescues. The only problem is there is never a definite time when they can do it. It’s just wait and see.

I had contacted Susie with the Boston Terrier Rescue group in SC because I knew she had some Pilots and Paws contact. She said she would work on it and get back to me. A few weeks later, I got a message from her that it was a go!!! Honey needed to be at the airport at 7:30 in the morning!! And I would have her by 2-3pm!! I was so excited!!

The people at the Paulding Airport were beyond nice!! They took me out to meet the plane in their little golf cart, and we all greeted Honey like a long lost relative. Russell Fletcher couldn’t have been a nicer person!! He does these transports often, and I am so grateful to him and Pilots and Paws for getting this little girl to me. She deserved to be saved. She is a wonderful dog, and she is going to make someone a fantastic companion. Until we find her the right home she will live with me and receive all the love and companionship she can handle with her foster brother Finn!

Thank you Pilots and Paws for all you do! YOU do make a difference and it does not go unnoticed!
